White Wine for Red Wine Lovers

Sure, you’re a fan of the darker side of things, but why not spread your wings and jump to the lighter side of the wine spectrum to try out something new? Don’t make that face. If you’re not sold on whites, it’s probably because you had a sour experience. Let us help you wade into the world of whites.

1. Choose a white from a region you like
Generally speaking, if you favor a certain region for their reds, chances are you might really bond well with their whites. Each region has a shared philosophy regarding winemaking. So if you like Rioja for all its unique charms with ripe red fruity notes, dazzling aroma and complexity, you’re most likely going to be completely seduced by their whites too.

2. Matchup character traits too
You love your cab sauv, so try the blanc version. Cabernet sauvignon is full-bodied and deep with a fruity character. Sauvignon blanc has these similar characteristics and could be your next favorite thing. However, you’ll want to keep in tune with the depth you’re used to and that’s why we strongly urge you stay away from New Zealand’s crisp and light versions. Instead, choose something from the Loire, Bordeaux or California.

3. You can’t go wrong with Italy
We can’t think of a time we were ever disappointed with anything Italian, particularly Italian wines. Italians put their gusto into white winemaking just like anything else. They have the kind of quality that livens things up so you’ll never feel bored with the flavors. Some to try are Trebbiano, Soave, Falinghina, and Aglianico.

4. Go backwards when dining out
When we dine out, we always choose our wine first. Then, we scour the menu to decide what will pair best. So shake things up and choose your food first. Then choose your wine to match your food. This is where switching to a white is going to be so much more interesting. As previously mentioned, inspect the wine list for Italian whites. However, if choosing a white wine seems completely foreign to you, ask your server, the sommelier or the bartender for recommendations. In a good place, you’ll be met with plenty of vivid information that will help you come to a sound decision.

5. Ask for recommendations
And even when you’re not dining out, you can always get recommendations from white wine drinkers. Your local wine shop should be an excellent source for honing in on a white you’ll love. If any of your friends adore whites, ask them what they tend to choose and give it a try.

Remember, the best part of wine is trying new things. From new vineyards to vintages to different styles, tasting it all and discovering what makes every bottle special is truly what makes wine drinking the most blissful of all.
