Ready For Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl: Tailgating with glass in hand.

Fear not Lovers. It is possible to be a football fan and keep your wine values intact! I have nothing against my IPA loving friends or those who prefer to partake in a cocktail or two as they cheer for their favorite team. Just because you love a little Sunday action on the gridiron, doesn’t mean you have to give up the grapes for barley and hops.

Here’s what I love to drink on that annual test of will and might.

Keep it light with the whites:

While there are never absolutely rules with wine, I tend to go white for football parties. With the plethora of flavors, you can expect to work through during the game, from bbq wings, to chips and dip and everything in between, white tends to be a bit more versatile when it comes to mixing with a range of flavors.

Go for a solid Californian Chardonnay, German Gruner Veltliner, Argentinian Torronteś or a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. An NY State Reisling also works well if you’re expecting a lot of spice on the table. Basically, you need a white wine with enough structure and body will hold its own, no matter what you pile on your plate.

If you just can’t give up the red, go for a light and bright Pinot Noir that won’t complete with that prize-winning spinach artichoke dip!

Cheap and Cheerful, sis, boom, bah!

Not that you can’t break us that 2015 Bourgogne Grand Cru for the occasion, I might suggest you save for another time. Remember, you’ll be eating 7-layer dip, not faux grass. Keep the price under $15 and make sure you serve well chilled. Wine.com has a great selection of well-rated wines under $15. Or, if you happen to live in SF, Chicago, San Diego, Sacremento, Oakland or NY, check out Saucey and get your goods delivered in 30 mins or less!

Wow, them with a wine cocktail:

Ok, so you’re on drink patrol and they crew isn’t as “enlightened” as you about your love of wine... What do you do? Well, never forget, the optimal word in super bowl party is “party.” And that means wine cocktails count! Go for a simple white-based sangria and watch the crowd sit back and smile.

Go Eagles!
